WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I – FULL TIME- 2 positions
The Town of Belchertown is seeking to fill two (2) Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I positions to work in the operation and maintenance of the municipal wastewater treatment plant and collection system.
Major duties include: Operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment equipment and processes, including pumps, blowers, filters, and disinfection systems. Perform routine laboratory tests and collect/process samples. Maintain pumping stations, monitor wells, record meter readings, and perform equipment repairs. Conduct grounds and facility maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and snow/brush clearing. Maintain operational records, logs, and inventory of supplies/chemicals. Respond to plant and sewer station alarms and emergency call-ins outside normal hours. Participate in weekend rotation on a 3-week cycle (with stipend).
Minimum qualifications: High school diploma (or equivalent) with coursework in chemistry, biology, or mechanical engineering, plus two years of experience in municipal wastewater operations (or equivalent combination). Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs., climb, kneel, work in confined spaces, and perform duties in varied outdoor conditions. Regular attendance and punctuality required.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Massachusetts Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license required.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.

This is a Grade 6 IUOE Local 98 union position, 40 hours per week, with a salary range of $25.62-$33.72/hour (rates effective 7/1/2025).
