Pay Range: $28.98 – $37.94/hour Hours: 40/ week (depending upon the wastewater license grade held)
Summary of Duties: The WPCF Operator is responsible for and participates in the operation and control of a complex advanced wastewater treatment plant. The Operator directs, supervises, and assists plant personnel and others in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, land-fill facility, and all other related facilities.
Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, Chief Operator, or their designee on the assigned shift.
Supervision Given: Supervises staff assigned to the Operator by the Operations Manager, Chief Operator, or their designee. Assigned staff may include the following: other wastewater treatment operators, laborers, skilled laborers, licensed equipment operators, laboratory personnel, and industrial pretreatment personnel.
Essential Functions: (The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be

● Make regular inspections to observe, check, maintain, and report on the operations of the plant equipment.
● Prepare and submit an operational log including reports of equipment malfunctions, with observations and recommendations.
● Perform operational sludge related duties.
● Diagnose unsafe and unhealthy conditions
● Determine causes of accidents and correct conditions and practices to prevent recurrence.
● Assist plant personnel during snow removal at the plant. This may include but is not limited to: snow shoveling, operating a snow blower, or plowing.
● Physically initiate or assist in the disassembly and reassembly of heavy grit system piping to facilitate cleaning of pipes; assist in the removal and subsequent replacement of new or rebuilt equipment into original or modified location.
● Able to push, lift, and pull items such as manhole covers, waste water sampling equipment, grit screws, motors and transmissions, R.A.S. & W.A.S. pumps, and motors, plant water pumps, and motors.
● Prepare and paint the equipment and structures of the treatment facility as needed, with a minimum of supervision.
● Ensure all wastewater technology and safety practices are followed and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• High School diploma or equivalent
• A minimum Grade five (5) Massachusetts Waste Water Treatment Operators License
• Possession of a class “D” driver’s license.
• Candidate must possess adequate knowledge and experience in operating a wastewater treatment facility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Candidate must have the ability to work with independence and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment. Have knowledge of mechanical equipment and the ability to diagnose and correct equipment malfunctions. General knowledge of computer systems. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, as well as stand, talk, listen, walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; and must have a sense of smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
