Title: Water Craftsman

Status: FLSA Non-Exempt, Union, 40 hours per week

Hours:Monday – Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Salary: FY26, Grade PW6  $29.0306 – $30.7759 for steps 1-3 (salary range exceeds hiring range)

General Summary: The purpose of this position is to perform skilled equipment operation and manual labor in the construction, operation and maintenance of the town’s water system; all related work as required.

Essential Job Functions: *

Water 

  • Participates in the construction of extensions to the water distribution system; installs water mains and lines, hydrants, valves, and pumps; excavates trenches and backfills excavations; repairs water mains, service lines, hydrants, and gates.
  • Responds to emergencies; determines appropriate corrective action; makes repairs of main and service leaks. 
  • Responds to questions and complaints and makes related repairs.
  • Performs general customer service activities including service turn-ons and shut-offs.
  • Operates tapping machine, backhoe, front-end loader, and hand operating equipment and power tools.Marks locations of underground water lines in conformance with Dig Safe regulations.
  • Prepares rough sketches of work performed and submits to supervisor.
  • Replaces broken or worn parts in systems involved. Digs, braces and backfills areas as required.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and facilities related to water system operation.
  • Maintains availability for emergency or stress situations.
  • Coordinates with other departments or private contractors. Assists other DPW divisions as necessary.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities:

  • Thorough working knowledge of public works equipment operation, water systems equipment and materials
  • Familiar with AMRs and water meters and backflow devices
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions and work extended hours as a result of emergencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and follow detailed oral and written instructions of supervisor
  • Knowledge of field safety with the ability to follow proper methods, procedures and safety precautions 
  • Prior municipal DPW water experience is a plus.

Minimum Requirements: *

  • High school education; three years of public works construction and maintenance experience including heavy equipment operation experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid CDL license or CDL permit, required.
  • Certified Operator-Water Distribution License.
  • Hydraulic License required.
  • Participation in the Town’s mandated drug and alcohol random testing program.
